Hyperdyne Systems is a technology-driven company that specializes in synthetic humans, weapons technology, and displacement drive engines for interstellar travel. They have established several mining installations throughout known space, but their core facilities are in the Hilo system. Previous partners with Weyland-Yutani Corporation, relations broke have broken down and in recent decades, open warfare between Hyperdyne and Weyland are a common sight. The ICC often has to step in and mediate conflicts between the two, although the ICC tends to favor the Weyland-Yutani position more often than not.
Feeling cornered by the ICC and Weyland-Yutani, Hyperdyne has begun to push out into less explored space and away from disputed territories.
They may look like average joes, but Hyperdyne Systems employees are some of the best paid, brilliant minded individuals in the known universe. Hyperdyne Systems operates one of the best education centers in the star system, teaching subjects that range from planetary Engineering to biomechanical engineering. Employees of Hyperdyne also receive basic combat and firearms training to help cope with the constant threat of conflict in space. An average Hyperdyne Systems engineer can not only do his job, but he can fight, too!
Rather than rely on a steady military force, Hyperdyne tends to utilize paid mercenary crews. Mercenaries are often as well equipped as the standing armies of other companies, but with no political ties, offer no major political fallout when things go wrong. Mercenaries also tend to work on contract, which means if they don't survive, they don't get paid! This makes them inexpensive and cheap to work with. Not to mention disposable.
History of Hyperdyne Systems
Hyperdyne is the pioneer of the synthetic humanoid industry. Once a favored partner of Weyland-Yutani, Hyperdyne supplied Weyland's exploration ships with synthetics to assist with manning the day to day tasks while the human crew was in hypersleep.
They were the sole manufacturer of the popular Hyperdyne 120 A/2 models, a once-standard staple of most interstellar fleets.
One such notable 120 A/2 model was called Ash. He was part of the crew of the Nostromo, a Weyland-Yutani ship that sat down on LV-426 (see movie "Alien")
Sometime in the mid 22nd century, Weyland-Yutani and Hyperdyne Systems cut ties and began disputing over everything from trade routes to planetary territory. Mineral rights, Equipment rights, and even who owned/employed various colonists.
Open warfare between Colonial Marines and BOTH Weyland-Yutani and Hyperdyne Systems' forces became commonplace. Eventually, Weyland-Yutani was able to use its seat on the ICC and vast amounts of influence in the USCM to sway warfare into its favor. Calling on ICC Marines to do its dirty work for it, "The Company" was able to muscle Hyperdyne around the star system time and again.
Currently, Hyperdyne Systems has taken up refuge in the Hilo system on the edge of populated space.
They are exploring planets and moons in the Bunda Survey cluster in search of precious minerals and other things useful to humanity.
Deep in the Bunda Survey cluster, they found Hydra, a gas giant.
2 of Hydra's moons fall within what's known as "The Goldilocks Zone." This "zone" is the ideal distance from a sun to be of the correct temperature to sustain carbon-based life; humans, for example.
Hydra 3 and Hydra 5 are of particular interest to Hyperdyne Systems.
Hydra 3 has a perfect atmosphere, clean water, and indigenous plant and animal life. It is the perfect site for a base colony in Bunda Survey. By all accounts, it is a paradise.
Hydra 5, an unassuming forrest planet, hides a rare set of gems beneath its surface. Massive deposits of both IMᶾ as well as Fauxite ore.
Fauxite is one of two main components of the fuel used for interstellar displacement drive engines. When combined with IMᶾ and distilled, the solution becomes a potent liquid fuel.
IMᶾ is a liquid metal similar to mercury. It is most often found on desolate, out-of-the-way planets or asteroids, but in this case, it has not only been located on the same planet as Fauxite, but in a vast underground quantity!
Taking the initiative, Hyperdyne Systems has set up a major mining installation to mine both the Fauxite and the IMᶾ and then distill it directly into interstellar fuel.
Hyperdyne's facility consists of a Mining site with base camp, an IMᶾ well pumping station, and a refinery complex that includes offices and other essential structures like a medical center.
Hopefully the secondary conflict in the region will keep Weyland-Yutani occupied long enough for them to bleed the moon dry of both resources before being discovered.
